Baleària explains benefits of LNG to MEPs of the Transport Committee
The Baleària shipping company explained its strategic commitment to the use of LNG to a delegation of MEPs, headed by Karima Delli, president of the Committee on Transport and Tourism, who visited Palma to learn about the situation of transport infrastructure and tourism services.
“We share our conviction that the preservation of the planet is compatible with competitiveness. For social responsibility and economic profitability, we promote the use of natural gas, a fuel that allows eliminating harmful emissions to health and reducing those that affect the environment, such as CO2 and NOx,” said José Manuel Orengo, General Secretary and Director of CSR and Reputation of Baleària.
Orengo also explained that Baleària currently has four ships powered by LNG, and that in 2021 the fleet running on this fuel will reach nine ships (three of new construction and six with adapted engines), with a total investment of 380 million euros. "The use of natural gas has allowed us to get ahead of the increasingly restrictive regulations on pollutant gases, and we are pioneers in natural gas navigation in the Mediterranean, the Strait of Gibraltar and the Canary Islands," he said.
On the other hand, the Director of ANAVE (Spanish Shipowners Association), Elena Seco, highlighted “the commitment of the shipping sector with decarbonization and the need to prioritize the measures that are most effective in the global sphere in reducing emissions without unnecessarily damaging the competitiveness of companies of the European Union."
